You Inherited your Parent’s 90’s Style Home: Now What?

Sponge painted walls, floral window valances stuffed with plastic grocery bags for added volume, hunter green walls, and that lovely floral wallpaper border. The 90’s trends were definitely some of the worst. Although these were the hot trends in the 90’s, we all know trends don’t last and it’s time to kick these to the curb.

So, what do you do with that home you inherited that is stuck 30 years in the past?  If you are ready to bring that home into this decade, here are five tips to get you started.

The most common update would be to remove the wallpaper borders and paint over the sponge painted walls, basically repaint the home. Since this is a no brainer, I’ll give you that tip as a bonus.

Tip 1: Update Metal Finishes

The first thing I’d recommend is to update those metal finishes.  Pick your new metal finish and start with replacing the door handles and hinges. You need to do both, trust me. Next, update that cabinet hardware, this will make a huge difference for a minimal cost depending on fixtures chosen. Finally, update those light fixtures. If you can’t afford a new light think about spray painting that brass light black or silver for a newer look.  Don’t miss those lights in the dining room, foyer, kitchen, and bathroom. Make sure to keep it consistent with the metal finishes you are using on the doors and hinges and hardware.

Tip 2: Update the Front Door

Many 90’s style homes had glass panels with triangles or other floral decorative patterns. Your front door sets the tone for what you’ll see inside.  If you can, select a new front door for a total update. Pick the style based on your current windows to make it relatable to what you have. If purchasing a new door isn’t in the budget, paint is a more budget friendly option.  I also like painting the interior of the front door for an extra pop of color in the entryway.

Tip 3: Paint that Wood

This one may raise some eyebrows, but I believe in painting outdated wood finishes.   I know not everyone would agree, but a fresh coat of paint on that outdated wood can deliver a stunning new look. Whether it’s your kitchen cabinets, wood trim, or outdated bathroom vanities, paint is an inexpensive way to update those undesirable 90’s styles.

Tip 4: Replace Outlet Covers, Light Switches, and Thermostats

One thing many people forget is to replace old outlet covers, light switches and the thermostat. Not only will this bring your home into 2022, if you choose a programmable thermostat, you may even end up saving yourself some money in the long run.

Tip 5: Redo those Floors

Finally, you need to update that flooring. Whether it be replacing that pink carpeting or refinishing those oak floors with a more updated stain color, this will make a huge difference.
